On Gillard and Getting the Nerd Girl Vote

In what was possibly the craziest 24 hours in Australian politics *ever* the existing Prime Minister Kevin Rudd was deposed and replaced by his deputy, Julia Gillard.

This gives Julia the historic honour of being the first female Prime Minister of Australia. But it's a tough election, her party has lost a lot of favour and everyone is looking to Julia to keep the power.

So Julia, if you want to keep the Nerd Girl vote have a think about the following:

  • Get on Twitter; if there was one thing that Krudd had down with the nerd girls is that he had a twitter and he was honest about how he used it. Lift your social media profile lady! If you Trend globally, you should really have an account.
  • Sack Conroy; the man is outdated, unpopular and a hindrance to any real future Australia has as a digital force
  • Drop the "clean feed" filter; listen to the feedback you're getting from the populace and look at alternatives. If you need to keep the 'family' vote then look at the filter client software the last government released.
  • Give us an adult game rating; this community is proof enough that a lot of gamers are adults, and want to see adult content. We have classifications for adult TV shows, movies and web content so why are games any different?
  • Continue with the National Broadband Network plans - but be sensible and have some oversight. Be realistic about where satellite and wifi are required, Australia has remote communities where wireline will never reach ROI. The last thing you want is for this program to take on the sort of criticism that the Education Revoluion did.
  • Keep funding and encouraging technology such as iView on the ABC, multicast digital channels and all the other great things that keep Australia in line with the best first world countries and their technology!
  • We love that you're a secular woman in a committed non marriage relationship; so maybe represent the other 'non standard' families. Give us same sex marriage, better adoption laws for single women and equal rights across the board.

Geeks Rejoice it's Free Comic Book Day

There may be no such thing as a free lunch, but there is such a thing as a free comic!

Tomorrow Saturday 1st of May 2010 is Free Comic Book Day! The annual event held on the first Saturday of May is designed to spread graphic novel acceptance and find new fans, or get existing comic book fans into a range of different comics. A range of promotional comics and even some back issues are available free on the day, each store can define whether that's 1, 10 or all of them so please be fair to their policy.

It's also a great time to stop by your local comic book shop and support a small business. Comic Book Shops remain one of the few local businesses that thrive on knowing their customers and their taste in collectables. Stop by, pick up a freebie and maybe purchase something in support. My friends will be "doing it like Stark" getting comics, going for a few drinks and then lapping up the superhero wonder of Iron Man 2

If you're in Sydney Kinokuniya are celebrating with a further 20% of all comics and manga.

Australian nerds rejoice! Bajo and Hex from the games review program Good Game and Good Game SP will be programming the weekend music video show Rage on the 19th of June.

Bajo looked to the Twitterverse to get some suggestions from his legion of fans and the great news is that Mi-Sex, Trololol and Erasure are all in; tune in on the 19th of June to find out what other gamer classics show the nerdy side of rock 'n' roll.

For more information check out the Rage website: http://www.abc.net.au/rage/guest/ and don't forget that you can watch Rage On Demand on their site and get a list of the guest programming highlights after the event!

Don't bother holding out for a hero

Heroes image

News just out that Heroes has indeed been cancelled after disappointing ratings for the last season.  Apparently there may be a possibility of a film.  I'm not that surprised as this season was quite slow in places, and actually, whilst this season ended on a cliff hanger, it was one that I wouldn't mind being left with.  It hinted at lots of future potential but could also be a good point to wrap on.

Also cancelled is Flashforward.  This I'm even less surprised by, as it's been really slow moving and I haven't felt invested in any of the characters really.  However the last few episodes have really picked up the pace, and I'm finally seeing the show I wish it had been in the beginning.

What's gender got to do with it?

Today I did something I often swear I won't do and that's gave both Mumbrella and Laurel Papworth's Blog a read. Really all I was left with was annoyance. For those of you who aren't obsessed with the microcosm that is Sydney focussed social media you're probably unaware of the blogtastic face off that's occurred in recent days between the two sites. Needless to say they don't like each other much and they have public blogs... wackiness ensues! \o/

For me Social Media is about the social and not the media. I don't work in PR, I don't work for a digital agency. I have the occasional appearance in traditional media but I don't use Twitter for a living and I don't attend networking events for anything but personal interest as a Nerd Girl. This is why really I am not an avid follower of either blog or ‘personality’ attached to each site. Generally I don't accept requests for network additions from people I don't know, and while I know a fair number of self styled Social Media Experts this is more to do with their ability to down pints and make comic references than their job title.

So why today did I read their blogs, why today do I feel it necessary to comment here?

Firstly because a lot of people have been posting links on Twitter about the whole Laurel v Tim ... noise for several days and I like to get my information from the source.

But mostly the reason that I was curious was because of a comment made to me at Girl Geek Dinners Sydney last week. A friend of mine was looking increasingly uncomfortable about a discussion of a mutual female acquaintance. I asked why my friend appeared so uncomfortable and was told this was because she was now paranoid about being labelled a bully after Laurel’s comments online and the wave of very public response that has followed.
